SUMMARY:National Safeguarding Leads: Undertaking Investigations in Sport Training
DESCRIPTION:\nSport Wales and the WSA are pleased to offer National Safeguarding Leads the opportunity to attend a free, face-to-face training session on Undertaking Investigations in Sport, delivered by highly experienced solicitor Sara Tomaszewski.\n\n\n\nWhat will the training include?\n\n\n\nThis specialist, high-level safeguarding CPD session will focus on safeguarding investigations, with expert input from legal professionals. The training will cover legal frameworks, evidential standards, interviewing approaches, and defensibility in decision-making. It will help delegates strengthen their understanding of the evidence needed to support a case, making investigations both safer and more legally robust. The session will also explore the legislative principles that underpin safeguarding case management, provide deeper insight into disclosures, and create a supportive space to test organisational case management processes and policies.\n\n\n\nWhy are we hosting this training for Safeguarding Leads?\n\n\n\nIt is essential that Safeguarding Leads feel confident in their organisation’s governance, policies, and case management processes. By developing a stronger understanding of the legal foundations that support safeguarding case management, delegates will be better equipped to make sound decisions and respond confidently when their practice is challenged. For smaller organisations in particular, opportunities to test policies and procedures through real cases can be limited. This training offers valuable space to strengthen confidence, review organisational readiness, and ensure systems are fit for purpose when they are needed most. By building legally sound, well-evidenced cases from the outset, organisations can also help reduce delays, support the well-being of those involved, and minimise unnecessary pressure on internal resources.\n\n\n\nSafeguarding is a core principle area of Arwain Cymru: A governance and people development framework. It is expected that sports organisations foster safe, inclusive environments where everyone can enjoy sport free from harm.\n\n\n\nWho is this training for?\n\n\n\nDue to the depth of this training, it is recommended for experienced Safeguarding Leads working in more developed organisations, those who regularly manage high-risk cases, and those seeking a more advanced understanding of legal frameworks and investigative practice. Please note that this training is available to Sport Wales partners and WSA members only.\n\n\n\nEvent details:\n\n\n\n· Date and time: Thursday 9th July 2026, 10:00am-3:00pm\n\n\n\n· Venue: Sport Wales National Centre\n\n\n\n· Registration deadline: Monday 29th June 2026, 12:00pm\n\n\n\nRefreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided for all attendees.\n\n\n\nWe encourage Safeguarding Leads to share case study examples in advance so they can be considered as part of the session. Please send these examples to [Sian Jones via sian.jones@wsa.wales .\n\n\n\nExamples might include questions about managing disclosures, evidencing concerns, decision-making in complex cases, or testing organisational procedures.\n\n\n\nSara Tomaszewski – Areas of expertise:\n\n\n\n· Child and Adult Safeguarding\n\n\n\nSara is a highly experienced solicitor, and Partner at Hugh James, whose primary area of practice is within the childcare sector, with particular experience representing local authorities across South Wales and England. She undertakes all aspects of proceedings, including advocacy. Sara also advises various organisations and provides training in the broader safeguarding arena.\n\n\n\nClick here to register your attendance.
