This is known as<strong> maintaining business\ncontinuity <\/strong>and helps ensure your organisation\u2019s resilience.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\nbusiness continuity plan highlights the possible risks your business might\nface, and the actions needed to overcome them. Otherwise your business could\nsuffer serious negative consequences such as losing income for a lengthy\nperiod, having problems with suppliers, seeing its reputation damaged and\nlosing staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creating your business\ncontinuity plan<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An\neffective plan sets out ways in which you can carry on with your main business\nactivities. It might involve moving to different premises or employees working\nfrom home. To complete the plan, you will need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Identify the\nmain activities of your business and the staff responsible for them;<\/li><li>Consider\nthose areas that are essential to the business staying afloat i.e. the major revenue\ngenerators;<\/li><li>Identify\nwhether the essential areas are dependent on any other areas; <\/li><li>Consider\nwhat would be an acceptable \u2018stop time\u2019 for the essential areas (and, if there\nare any, the dependencies too);<\/li><li>Identify the internal and external risks that could\nlead to a major disruption, such as the sudden failure of your computer network\nor extreme weather conditions;<\/li><li>Assess the impact of these risks e.g. using a RAG\nrating;<\/li><li>Make a plan of action to reduce the likelihood of\nthese risks and their impact and maintain essential areas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\nwill also need to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Any financial, legal or regulatory penalties if you\ncan&#8217;t provide a service that you&#8217;re contracted to supply.<\/li><li>How long your business could go without items it\nnormally uses like specialist software or equipment.<\/li><li>How you would cope with a major disruption &#8211;\nperhaps because of a lengthy power cut or damage to your premises.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once\nyou have drawn up the plan, train your staff so that they will know what to do.\nReview the plan regularly to make sure it&#8217;s still effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What should a business continuity plan\ninclude?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Purpose\nand scope<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details of the plan should be provided, and any\nexclusions must be explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Responsibilities<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persons with authority during and after an incident\nmust be assigned roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Plan\ninvocation<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details of how and when the BCP will be invoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Developing\nthe BCP<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information in the plan must be understood by and\naccessible to everyone in the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Communications<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How, and under which circumstances, the\norganisation will communicate with employees and their relatives, key\ninterested parties and emergency contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Stakeholders<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide information relating to essential\nstakeholders, including their contact details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Document\nowner, approver and change history record<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The business continuity manager is the owner of the\nBCP and is responsible for ensuring that the procedure is reviewed and tested\nregularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Change\nmanagement<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document must be published in a place that is\navailable to all members of staff, especially those directly involved in the\nBCP, and in all appropriate formats (digital, hard copy, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many template continuity plans online <a href=\"https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/WSA-Template-Business-Continuity-Plan.docx\" class=\"ek-link\">such as this one<\/a>, but please ensure that you adapt them to meet the requirements of you own organisational priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Advice &amp;\nGuidance<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK Government issued guidance to help businesses plan to deal with the impact of a major incident or disaster &#8211;
