{"id":24150,"date":"2021-08-09T11:43:39","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T10:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsa.wales\/?p=24150"},"modified":"2021-08-09T11:43:41","modified_gmt":"2021-08-09T10:43:41","slug":"does-your-sports-organisation-know-its-responsibilities-when-it-comes-to-data-protection-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsa.wales\/cy\/does-your-sports-organisation-know-its-responsibilities-when-it-comes-to-data-protection-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Does your sports organisation know its responsibilities when it comes to data protection?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you run a sports club, association or a similar organisation you need to make sure you understand your responsibilities when it comes to the personal information of your members, staff and volunteers.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Information Commissioner\u2019s Office (ICO) is responsible for making sure all organisations comply with the law including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GDPR and DPA2018 govern the use of personal data. Personal data is more than just someone\u2019s name or address \u2013 it can be any information that relates to a living individual. You can find out more about what personal data is <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/guide-to-data-protection\/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr\/what-is-personal-data\/what-is-personal-data\" class=\"ek-link\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data protection officers (DPOs) assist you to monitor internal compliance, inform and advise on your data protection obligations, provide advice regarding Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and act as a contact point for data subjects and the ICO.\u00a0Not all organisations are required to have a DPO, this <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/does-my-organisation-need-a-data-protection-officer-dpo\/\" class=\"ek-link\">self-assessment tool<\/a> will help establish if you need one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Information security and training<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal data is an asset to all of us. It\u2019s therefore important that you protect the personal information you hold about your members with the appropriate level of security. This means having measures in place to ensure it is stored and used appropriately, especially as you may be collecting and using information about children. It doesn\u2019t have to be rigorous, but it does need to be relevant to their role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>People\u2019s rights to their information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the new laws, people have increased rights giving them greater control over their personal information. For example, individuals have a right to be told what is happening to their information \u2013 this is often done through providing an individual with a privacy notice, but can also be done verbally. Individuals can also ask you for copies of their information. This is called a subject access request. You can find out more about these rights, along with the others, <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/guide-to-data-protection\/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr\/individual-rights\/\" class=\"ek-link\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Data protection fee<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law requires most organisations who process personal data to pay a fee to the ICO, unless they are exempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re not sure if you need to pay you can check using the <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/data-protection-fee\/self-assessment\/\" class=\"ek-link\">ICO online tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do I find out more?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have any data protection concerns or queries, the ICO is here to help.
