{"id":32342,"date":"2026-06-22T08:21:42","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T07:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wsa.wales\/?p=32342"},"modified":"2026-06-22T08:22:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T07:22:50","slug":"former-cardiff-city-players-help-tackle-dementia-through-expanded-1927-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsa.wales\/cy\/former-cardiff-city-players-help-tackle-dementia-through-expanded-1927-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Cardiff City players help tackle dementia through expanded 1927 Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Former Cardiff City players help tackle dementia through expanded 1927 Club<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WSA member <strong>Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, <\/strong>the official charity of Cardiff City FC, was recently  awarded \u00a325,000 from the Premier League and PFA Players\u2019 Fund to expand their 1927 Club project, in partnership with the Cardiff City FC Former Players Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the heart of the project is the role former Cardiff City players play in reconnecting supporters through shared memories, conversation and a lifelong love of football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Named in tribute to Cardiff City FC\u2019s historic 1927 FA Cup victory, the <strong>1927 Club<\/strong> provides a welcoming social space for individuals living with dementia, alongside their families and carers. Through football reminiscence, social interaction and shared experiences, the programme helps reduce isolation and improve wellbeing among participants across South Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This new funding will allow the Community Foundation to significantly expand the project across multiple local authorities, delivering three weekly sessions over a 48-week period in community settings including care homes and dementia caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key part of the programme is the involvement of former Cardiff City players, who attend sessions as active participants rather than guest appearances. By listening, sharing stories and spending time with supporters, former players help create a genuine sense of belonging for those attending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Led by <strong>Roger Gibbins<\/strong> through the <strong>Cardiff City Former Players Association<\/strong>, participating former professionals include <strong>Tarki Micallef, Gary Bell, Jimmy Mullen, Dave Giles, Lee Jarman<\/strong> and <strong>Terry Boyle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roger-Gibbins-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roger-Gibbins-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roger-Gibbins-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roger-Gibbins-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roger-Gibbins-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roger-Gibbins-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/wsa.wales\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roger-Gibbins-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Roger Gibbins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:13px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project reflects the shared commitment of Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, the Premier League and the Professional Footballers\u2019 Association to use the power of football and the unique connection players have with supporters to improve lives within local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To mark the partnership, the <strong>Former Players Association<\/strong> welcomed <strong>Dawn Astle<\/strong>, daughter of former England international <strong>Jeff Astle<\/strong> and founder of the <strong>Jeff Astle Foundation<\/strong>, to Cardiff City Stadium to speak about brain health and the importance of supporting current, former and future players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event brought together former players, Club and Community Foundation staff, partners, participants and carers to highlight the positive role football can play in bringing people together and supporting those affected by dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of the programme, up to 270 participants are expected to engage with the sessions, which combine reminiscence activities, gentle physical activity and peer support in safe and inclusive environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Zac, CEO at Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re incredibly grateful to the Premier League and PFA Players\u2019 Fund for supporting this important project and recognising the value former players can bring within our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe connection between former players and supporters is incredibly powerful. Through shared memories, conversations and experiences, the 1927 Club creates an environment where people feel valued, welcomed and part of something meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis funding allows us to reach more individuals and families across South Wales, particularly within communities where traditional matchday or stadium-based activity may not always feel accessible for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Roger Gibbins, Lead at Cardiff City FC Former Players Association, shared:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As a former player, I believe the Former Players Association adds invaluable support to the 1927 Club.
