WSA welcomes Welsh Government announcement of further £2 million of capital investment in Welsh sport
The WSA welcomes Welsh Government’s recent announcement of a a further £2 million of capital investment in Welsh sport, which follows the excellent launch of the new Swim Wales school swimming and water safety initiative.
The additional investment in facilities – including swimming pool accessibility, artificial pitches, energy efficiency and the legacy of the Tour de France – is positive recognition of the role sport plays in communities across Wales. However, capital investment is only part of the picture.
The wider sport and physical activity sector remains in real need of additional and sustainable revenue funding. Facilities need people and programmes to bring them to life, while national governing bodies, clubs and sporting partners need the capacity to continue providing safe, accessible and high-quality opportunities for people to be active.
We welcome the Minister’s recognition that sport is integral to Wales’ national life, economy, communities and wellbeing. The next step is ensuring that ambition is matched by sustainable investment across the sector.
With the Welsh Government committed to increasing funding for sport year-on-year, attention now turns to November’s Draft Budget. We look forward to seeing how that commitment translates into additional revenue investment and, importantly, how it reaches the organisations delivering sport and physical activity across Wales.
A stronger and more resilient sport sector can play a major role in prevention, healthier communities and Wales’ wider ambitions. Capital investment matters, but it must be matched by investment in the people and organisations that make sport happen.
