Building a more sustainable future for Welsh sport

Sustainability is an important part of our vision for a vibrant, active nation and our commitment to supporting a sports sector that is strong, resilient and fit for the future.

We recognise the role that sport can play in tackling the climate and nature emergencies. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our own organisation while supporting our members, partners and the wider Welsh sport sector to take meaningful action.

Our approach is focused on measuring our impact, reducing our emissions, embedding sustainability into our decision-making and sharing knowledge across the sector.

Our ambition

We aim to achieve net zero by 2050.

We are working towards this ambition by making carbon reduction and environmental sustainability an integral part of our business planning and decision-making.

Our sustainability journey is continuous. We will continue to improve the quality of our data, identify opportunities to reduce our environmental impact and work collaboratively with our members, partners and supply chain to accelerate progress.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan

Our Carbon Reduction Plan sets out how we are measuring and reducing the carbon emissions associated with our organisation and the practical actions we are taking to move towards net zero.

In 2026, we published our second Carbon Reduction Plan, using data from 2025 and building on our first year of carbon reporting. The plan enables us to understand where our greatest impacts sit, monitor progress against our targets and identify further opportunities for reduction.

As our reporting develops, we are also improving the accuracy and completeness of the data we collect. This is an important part of ensuring that our reduction plans are based on a reliable understanding of our environmental impact.

Our priorities include:

• Measuring and reporting our carbon emissions consistently.
• Reducing energy consumption and identifying opportunities to improve the efficiency of our operations.
• Reducing business travel and encouraging lower-carbon alternatives where possible.
• Considering sustainability in procurement and purchasing decisions.
• Reducing waste and increasing reuse and recycling.
• Working with our landlords, suppliers and partners to improve the sustainability of our operations.
• Embedding sustainability into organisational decision-making and planning.
• Sharing learning and good practice with our members and the wider sports sector.

Working together for a sustainable sports sector

We believe collaboration is essential to delivering meaningful change.

The WSA works with organisations across Welsh sport, government, business and the wider sustainability community to share knowledge, identify solutions and encourage action.

Through our sustainability work, we aim to:

• Help sports organisations understand their environmental impact.
• Share practical tools, guidance and examples of good practice.
• Connect our members with relevant expertise and support.
• Encourage organisations across the sector to develop their own carbon reduction plans.
• Create opportunities for the sector to learn from one another.
• Champion sustainability through our events, communications and networks.

Our Sustainability in Sport Conference is one example of how we bring people together to share ideas, experiences and practical approaches to sustainability.
