2025 BASIS Conference brings sustainability to centre stage at Stamford Bridge

Earlier this month, the 2025 BASIS (British Association for Sustainable Sport) Conference took place at Stamford Bridge, the iconic home of Chelsea Football Club. The event brought together sustainability professionals, industry leaders, and representatives from across the sporting world to explore the vital role sport can play in tackling climate change and driving environmental action.

Held annually, the BASIS Conference has become a key fixture for organisations committed to sustainability within sport. This year’s programme featured a range of expert panels, case studies and collaborative workshops focused on accelerating progress toward net zero, embedding circular economy principles, and promoting climate resilience through sport-led initiatives.

The event provided a platform for sharing practical solutions, highlighting successful projects, and sparking new partnerships across the sector. Attendees heard from a diverse mix of voices from the chair of Sport England Chris Boardman and former professional footballer David Wheeler, all united by a shared commitment to environmental responsibility.

Among the attendees was the Welsh Sports Association’s very own Sustainability Champion, Sion Jones, who joined peers in learning from pioneering approaches and gaining insights into the latest trends shaping the future of sustainable sport. The conference offered valuable takeaways that will help inform and inspire our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental impact of the sports sector in Wales and lead by example within the sector.

The 2025 BASIS Conference served as a powerful reminder of the influence and responsibility that the world of sport holds in creating a more sustainable future and the momentum gained at Stamford Bridge will no doubt carry forward into the months and years ahead. Building on this energy, the third edition of our WSA Sustainability in Sport Conference will be held later in the year, continuing the conversation and bringing together key voices to drive action at a local and national level.
