Best of sport in Conwy celebrated at Conwy Sports Awards 2023

Welsh Sports Association (WSA) members Conwy County Borough Council held the Conwy Sports Awards 2023 – the event’s 30th edition – on 24 November at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru , recognising and honouring the talented sports people, sports clubs, coaches and volunteers from the county.

Over 320 people from a variety of sporting backgrounds attended the event, which was kindly sponsored by Sport Conwy.

British Sportswoman and Winter Olympic Bronze medal winner Laura Deas presented the awards to the deserving winners, alongside professional sports announcer and commentator Matt Ward, who was the master of ceremonies.

Among the winners was twelve-year-old skier Xavier Poynton who won Junior Sportsman. Excelling in slalom racing, he was selected for the Great Britain U14 team and was part of the winning team at April’s British Championships in Tignes.

This year’s awards also saw Ysgol Y Gogarth in Llandudno pick up the School of the Year Award for their wide range of inclusive sporting health and wellbeing activities, both in school and extracurricular.

There was a total of twelve categories, including the Special Achievement Award, presented to Conwy Yacht Club members Richard and Petra Haig, who overcome many challenges to complete a world circumnavigation this summer on their 46-foot yacht.

Cllr Aaron Wynne, Conwy County Borough Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said:

“A massive congratulations to all the winners and runners-up at this year’s Conwy Sports Awards. It was an honour to hear about the hard work and dedication of all of the nominees, a wonderful celebration of the sporting excellence in Conwy County.

“We hope that the Sports Awards will continue to inspire and motivate Conwy’s most talented in their chosen sport. Not only do we recognise the athletes, but their coaches, teams, families and sponsors, who add to their success.
