An Evening of Inspiration at the GLL Foundation Awards in Cardiff

On the evening of Wednesday 30 April, Sophia Gardens played host to an uplifting celebration of sporting talent at the GLL Foundation Awards.

The event showcased the incredible young athletes from Cardiff who are set to benefit from a remarkable package of support thanks to the generosity and commitment of WSA member organisation GLL – the UK’s largest leisure charitable social enterprise.

In partnership with Cardiff Council, GLL operates local leisure facilities under the ‘Better’ brand, and last night’s awards highlighted just how impactful that partnership is for grassroots and emerging elite athletes alike.

In total, 98 talented athletes were awarded support valued at £73,000, including nearly £12,000 in cash bursaries. These vital resources will help athletes access free memberships to sports venues and leisure centres, receive financial support for training and competition, and benefit from other crucial athlete services.

The future of Welsh sport was truly on display, with 69% of awardees under the age of 21 and an impressive 30% under 16. The room was brimming with current Wales and UK champions, a testament to the depth of talent in the region and a powerful reminder that Wales continues to fly the flag for physical activity and sporting excellence.

Reflecting on the evening, WSA CEO Andrew Howard, commented:

“It was impossible not to be inspired by the incredible young athletes recognised tonight. The depth of talent in Cardiff is extraordinary, and events like this give us every reason to be optimistic about the future. We are hugely grateful to GLL for their investment – not only in these athletes but in the wider promotion of physical activity and wellbeing across the region.”

The evening not only celebrated individual achievements but also reinforced the importance of community investment in sport, providing young athletes with the opportunity and platform to reach their full potential.
