Carbon Literacy Training: 6 & 13 June 2024

Carbon Literacy for Charities and Social Enterprises working in Public Leisure and Culture

This course is specifically designed for charitable organisations managing facilities within the public leisure and culture sector in England, Scotland and Wales. Local authority officers with a leisure or culture portfolio may also benefit from this course. Public leisure and culture facilities commonly, but not exclusively, includes leisure centres, swimming pools, sport halls, village/town halls, museums/galleries, libraries, and theatres.

Carbon Literacy is a term used to describe an awareness of climate change, and the climate impacts of humankind’s everyday actions. It is the knowledge and capacity required to create a positive shift in how we live, work and behave in response to climate change. The Carbon Literacy Project is designed to create impact quickly and at scale by encouraging bespoke sector learning through peer-to-peer training.

Community Leisure UK designed this course by building on their expertise of supporting charities and social enterprises working across public leisure and culture in England, Scotland and Wales. The course has been trialled and tested with Community Leisure UK members to ensure it is fit for purpose, and has been accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project.

Please note that this course will be delivered by the Workers Education Association (WEA) on behalf of Community Leisure UK. Learners will need to complete their registration with WEA after booking through Eventbrite – please follow the link in your booking confirmation.

Course delivery

This training will be delivered online over two half days. You will need to attend both training days to complete the training. The dates are:

Day 1 – Thusday June 6, 9:00 – 13:00

Day 2 – Thursday June 13, 9:00 – 13:00

Each training day includes group discussion and reflection, videos and case studies, and activities to complete individually and as a group to aid learning.

At the end of the training, each learner will need to fill out a reflection and evidence form which will be submitted to the Carbon Literacy Project for review. This form asks for a short reflection on your understanding of climate change and your committed actions. Upon successful completion of the form, the Carbon Literacy Project will issue certifications to the learner and you can call yourself Certified Carbon Literate. Please note that Community Leisure UK does not certify learners and that the decision to issue a certificate following course completion is made independently by the Carbon Literacy Project.
