How the WSA x Net World Sports competition has benefited various sections of Merthyr Town FC

In April, the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) ran a competition with partners Net World Sports, with six clubs benefitting from vouchers to spend on top-of-the-range sporting equipment.

Clubs affiliated to WSA members had the opportunity to enter the competition, and those successful won a share of £2,500.

One of the six lucky clubs was Merthyr Tydfil FC, who received a grant of £250 to spend on Net World Sports products.

The club was one of four that received £250, while Maesteg Squash Club earned £500, and North Wales Crusaders Wheelchair Rugby League & Disability Sports Club won the top prize of £1000.

With Merthyr Town FC containing various sections, the win was important to continue supporting all of its members, as Club Secretary Jack Hodgkins told the WSA when we went to chat to him about the competition’s impact.

“It’s brilliant for us as a club,” he explained.

“Obviously, it’s a club that we have a lot of teams in, across a lot of sections; so, between the walking football, the academy, the first team, as well as the U19s, to enter competitions like that to hopefully purchase equipment is always beneficial for us.

“With the number of teams we have, any help we can get is great, in terms of purchasing stuff.”

Jack went on to confirm that the award of the £250 grant had been warmly welcomed.

“It’s got a very positive reaction from, obviously, the club and the supporters as well, so yeah it was great news!”

The voucher went towards the acquisition of 30 new footballs for the club, which has been of great use for a number of sections.

“The footballs are used by the academy and the senior team.

“Our U19s and U16s use the balls from Net World Sports for their FAW Academy matches, and then the senior team use the balls for their first-team training sessions here at Penydarren Park.”

Upon concluding and thanking the WSA and Net World Sports, Jack summarised why the competition’s prizes, and grants like them, prove so vital for clubs across the sport and leisure sector.

“Anything to help with the costs of equipment and purchasing stuff these days is always beneficial,” he confirmed.

“Our academy is a fairly new set up after COVID-19, and so any help they can get with purchasing of equipment is always great. Net World Sports is a company that we’ve used before for sports equipment so to get something back is great as well!”
