First Aid for Sport training course now live on WSA Online Training Platform

The Level 1 First Aid in Sport training course is now available to take on the WSA Online Training Platform, in collaboration with training platform providers eCoach, with members eligible for preferential rates.

Following the launch of Introduction to Sports Governance in Wales and Legal Structures for Sports Clubs, the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) is delighted to be able to offer yet another vital piece of training and CPD for the sector.

Within Level 1 First Aid for Sport, a course pitched at an introductory level and perfect for onboarding new coaches and volunteers. Participants will benefit from a broad introduction to essential first aid, which includes key areas for sport such as basic life support and CPR, how to operate a defibrillator, managing head injuries and more.

At the end of the course, which takes around 4-5 hours to complete, participants should have the confidence and knowledge to create a Medical Emergency Action Plan (MEAP) for their club.

The course will teach participants how to prevent injury and promote safety measures as a coach or volunteer, and how to initiate first aid whilst waiting for a medical professional.

WSA CEO Andrew Howard explained:

“Since joining the WSA, several members have asked if we knew of a suitable course for first aid in sport as they had been signposting members to various first aid at work courses. I discussed this with some medical professionals, and we agreed to develop something bespoke for the sector.

“I completed the course at home last weekend, and I feel confident in being able to help at my son’s sports clubs, should the need ever arise.”

The topics covered in the course are:

  • What is First Aid and Medical Emergency Action Plan
  • Basic Life Support and CPR
  • Chest compressions and rescue breaths
  • Automated external defibrillators (AED’s)
  • Severe bleeding
  • Choking
  • Asthma
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Head injuries concussion management
  • Fractures and Shoulder injuries

As with other training on the WSA Online Training Platform, the course will culminate in an assessment which will see participants awarded with a certificate on successful completion.

The Online Training Platform is designed to support colleagues across sport and leisure to participate in accredited professional development, building resilience and aiding development across our sector.

The training covers essential areas, first aid being a duty of care for all coaches and volunteers.

The training courses Introduction to Sports Governance in Wales, Legal Structures for Sports Clubs and Data Protection Fundamentals for Sports & Leisure Organisations are also currently live on the Platform.

The WSA will also be releasing a Strategic Planning course in the new year.
