A memorable weekend for Welsh sport
The final weekend of October proved a memorable one for Welsh stars across an array of sports.
Friday 24th October
Anna Morris, Meg Barker and Jess Roberts win bronze as part of the women’s team pursuit quartet at the Cycling World Track Championships in Chile.
Saturday 25th October
Josh Tarling wins gold winning the men’s points race, totalling 750 points in the 40km event to beat Peter Moore (USA) (675 points). It was the 21 year olds first appearance in the World Championships, and first GB winner in the points since Jonathan Dibben (2016).
Ruby Evans wins the floor silver at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia. Ruby is the first Welsh gymnast to win an individual medal at the World Championships. The 18 year old, finished runner-up to Japan’s Aiko Sugihara with a score of 13.666.

Tennis player James Story, the Welsh number one from Cardiff, beat Anton Matusevich (GB) to win the ITF M25 singles title in Sheffield – the biggest win of his career, taking the title in a third set tie-break. James began the tournament with an ATP world ranking of 544.
Jess Fishlock, 38,made her 166th and final international appearance as Wales were beaten 2 – 1 by Australia at the Cardiff City Stadium. Fishlock has incredibly played 166 of the 246 international games played by Wales women – just over two-thirds of the total. Wales goal was scored by 18 year-old Mared Griffiths, who was born in March 2007 – just under 12 months after Fishlock’s international debut!
Sunday 26th October
Mimi Xu wins the singles and doubles titles at the Lexus Wrexham Open. In the singles final, the 18 year-old from Swansea beat fellow GB player Mika Stojsavljevic 6 – 3, 7 – 5, and later teamed up with Ella McDonald to beat Amarni Banks and Valentina Ryser 6 – 2, 6 – 4.

Anna Morris wins gold defending the individual pursuit title she won in the Cycling World Track Championships in Denmark last year, beating Josie Knight (GB) by 2.317 seconds in Santiago. Morris also won silver in the women’s points race, going from sixth to second in the final sprint for the line.
Emma Finucane won silver in the keirin, finishing behind Japan’s Mina Sato. Keirin remains the only event in which she is yet to claim a major gold.
