Cardiff Accies win inaugural Wales Veterans’ FA Women’s League
WSA members Wales Veterans’ FA have completed their first ever Women’s League, with Cardiff Accies being named champions.
The side from the capital lifted the inaugural WorkwearSupermarket.com Wales Veteran’s Women’s League trophy after a closely fought day of matches against Evans & Williams Ladies FC from Llanelli, Cambrian United Women from the Rhondda and Penybont Ladies from Bridgend.
In the final round of 18 matches played in a ‘Round Robin’ format throughout the season, the Accies beat Cambrian 1-0 through a ‘Claire Bear’ goal, drew 0-0 with Penybont and then defeated main rivals Evans & Williams (Albies) 2-0 with Becky Evans and ‘Macca’ on the scoresheet.
Albies, who finished runners-up, defeated both Penybont and Cambrian 1-0, Leanne Williams and Becky Evans scoring respectively. Penybont beat Cambrian 1-0, with Dawn Horn getting the winner.
Thanks to the vision and hard work of Katie Davies, Stacey Netterfield, Carly Rees and Jo Davies, working closely with the Wales Veterans’ Football Association, the Wales Veterans’ FA Ladies O35s League was officially realised this season.
Jo enthused:
“What a moment for women’s veterans football in Wales! What started a year ago as a friendly tournament between O35s walking football teams, has grown into something truly special, with teams now competing regularly in the ‘Running’ game.”
“Just because we’re over 35 doesn’t mean we’ve stopped wanting to compete, RUN, and play against women our own age,” she added, “and now that passion has created history!”
Katie commented:
“A huge thank you to every club and player who helped make this first season possible. The support, commitment, and community spirit have been amazing to see, and this is only the beginning!
“Following a short-break, a ‘bigger and better’ Women’s League will kick-off again in September; the O35s will be expanded to include 12 teams and we hope to introduce O45s and O50s too.
