Three Nations Set to Compete as Celtic Cup Comes to Llandudno for the First Time
A brand-new international triathlon competition will make its long-awaited debut this summer as the Celtic Cup 2026 arrives in Llandudno delivered by North Wales based Always Aim High Events, bringing together athletes from across Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.
The event will see Triathlon Cymru, Triathlon Scotland, and Triathlon Ireland go head-to-head in a thrilling team-based competition, with each nation selecting its top athletes to compete for Celtic Cup honours.
Originally scheduled to launch in October 2025 as a Wales vs Scotland fixture, the event was postponed due to severe weather conditions. Now, on 28th June 2026 and hopefully with some better weather, it returns bigger than ever, with the addition of Ireland to create a truly three-nation contest.
Set against the stunning North Wales coastline, athletes will take on a standard distance triathlon, consisting of:
- 1500m sea swim
- 34.75km bike
- 9.4km run
The Celtic Cup is designed not only to showcase elite racing but also to celebrate the spirit of triathlon and national pride, with competitors racing in their national colours.
In addition to the main event, the Celtic Cup weekend will feature a range of activities aimed at engaging both the local community and visiting supporters. These include: a community day with development opportunities for coaches, technical officials and athletes; a parade of nations; and a shake out run, creating a festival atmosphere in the lead-up to race day. All of this has been made possible with funding from Event Wales, Welsh Government.
Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport Heledd Fychan said: “The Celtic Cup weekend is great news for Llandudno, north Wales and sport in Wales. It provides the opportunity to showcase the excellent facilities we have here. We look forward to welcoming athletes from Scotland and Ireland to Wales to take part in this exciting event.”
With three nations, a spectacular coastal setting, and a full weekend of activity, the Celtic Cup 2026 is set to become a standout fixture in the triathlon calendar.
