Commonwealth Games: Come on Team Wales!

Commonwealth Games: Come on Team Wales!

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) would like to heartily wish Team Wales the best of luck as our athletes prepare to start their respective journeys at the Commonwealth Games, starting on the 28th July!

Cymru will head to Birmingham 2022 looking to build on the stunning showing it put in at the last Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast 2018. Wales achieved its highest ever medal haul at those games, picking up a brilliant 10 Gold, 12 Silver, and 14 bronze medals.

The opportunity to represent Wales in international competition is rare but every four years, the Commonwealth Games gives athletes the unique chance to don the red of Cymru. Wales are one of just six nations, alongside England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Scotland, to have participated in each of the 21 Commonwealth Games to have taken place since the inaugural event in 1930.

This year there will be a total of 201 athletes representing Wales in Birmingham; you can take a look at them all in Team Wales’ athletes directory!

Team Wales athletes will compete across 15 sports- Athletics, Cycling, Swimming, Weightlifting, Gymnastics, Boxing, Judo, Netball, Rugby 7s, Hockey, Squash, Lawn Bowls, Table Tennis, Triathlon, and Wrestling.

We can’t wait to watch our athletes take to their respective stages and compete for Cymru, both through our TV screens but also in person, with our Commercial Manager Tom Sharp ensuring there will be WSA representation among the Welsh support!

You can read the inspirational stories of some of the people that fought to represent their nation at this level on the Sport Wales website.

And you can discover all you need to know about the upcoming Games and Wales’ efforts on the Team Wales website.

For now, we at the Welsh Sports Association say, come on Cymru!
