WSA welcomes Sport Diversity Cymru as Full Member

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) is thrilled to welcome Sport Diversity Cymru to the membership base as a Full Member.

Funded by Sport Wales and lead by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), Sport Diversity Cymru is an initiative, established to increase sporting participation amongst ethnic minority communities across Wales.

Formerly known as ‘BME Sport Cymru’, the project was set up in 2016 to support a sustainable approach to sports participation, with three main priorities:

  • Increase BME participation in sport
  • Build capacity for BME engagement in sport
  • Tackle inequality

The project has not only achieved the delivery targets (around participation, volunteering, events, partnerships) but it has also achieved many other additional outcomes around health, crime, training and education, community cohesion, confidence, and tackling isolation which far outweigh the initial objectives alone.

Sport Diversity Cymru offers free training and guidance to the sport sector to increase knowledge, awareness of barriers and how to engage effectively with different ethnically diverse groups, with a focus on how to make sports clubs more welcoming and inclusive for people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds.

As a Full Member of the WSA, Sport Diversity Cymru will look to take advantage of our various forums and networking opportunities for greater recognition and visibility.

National Sports Diversity Manager at the WCVA, Rajma Begum, stated:

“We are excited to have become a full member of WSA, to take advantage of the member benefits and be able to engage much more extensively with the Welsh sport partners.  We also hope to be able to influence the sector and services to be more inclusive and offer our support to existing members of WSA.”

WSA Commercial Manager, Tom Sharp, added:

“The WSA is fully committed to ensuring that the sport and leisure sector is as accessible, inclusive, and diverse for all to enjoy.

“We are delighted to welcome Sport Diversity Cymru (WCVA) to the membership base and look forward to collaborating and supporting their fantastic work moving forward.”
