Swansea University is looking for applications for a Research Studentship to start this year.
The University is a UK top 30 institution for research excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014), and has been named Welsh University of the Year 2017 by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.
Through involvement in sport, children can gain many psychological and social benefits. Although such benefits are frequently promoted, they are not guaranteed. Young people involved in sport can experience multiple forms of abuse and maltreatment, ranging from bullying and overtraining to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. As sport is increasingly promoted to young people as a healthy endeavour, it is critical that risks of maltreatment and abuse are addressed and minimised.
This project aims to use participatory action research as a form of critical enquiry to work with young people to examine safeguarding in sport. Specifically, this project seeks to engage with approximately 20-30 young people (aged 10-15 years) and identify What issues they face when participating in sport; their concerns regarding their personal safety in sport; and most importantly their suggestions for educating and improving the behaviour of those around them.
The supervisory team will comprise Dr. Camilla Knight, Dr. Denise Hill, & Dr. Victoria Lovett. This work will be carried out in conjunction with external partners.
