Launch of new Welsh language support services from the WSA

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) is proud and excited to introduce new support services that promote the development and use of the Welsh language among its members.

The WSA has formed a partnership with the National Centre for Learning Welsh, providing a range of learning resources as part of its fully-funded ‘Work Welsh’ scheme, which aims to strengthen Welsh language skills in workplaces across Wales.

As part of the partnership, the inaugural WSA Raising Confidence Residential Course will be held during 13-17 March 2023!

The main aim of this sport-specific, Intermediate-level course is to give people who already speak some Welsh the opportunity to improve their Welsh-language skills and gain confidence in using them.

Attendees will spend 5 days and 4 nights in the beautiful setting of Nant Gwrtheyrn, near Pwllheli, with colleagues from the sport and leisure sector, following lessons, meeting new people and enjoying practising their Welsh.

Alongside this exciting opportunity, the WSA will be promoting a new 10-hour online self-study course for beginners.

Another free service, the Welsh Language Sport and Leisure Course is split into two parts and ten units, each around an hour. This introductory course will teach learners specific Welsh language terminology for the sport and leisure sector.

WSA CEO Andrew Howard said; “We are delighted to work with the National Centre for Learning Welsh to offer these Learn Welsh courses to our members,  and are determined to help the Welsh Government achieve their ambitious target of 1 million Welsh speakers by 2050.

“Additionally, one of the Welsh Government’s well-being goals in the Future Generations Act is a Wales of vibrant culture and thriving Welsh language and so the sport and leisure sector is critical for achieving this.”

Dona Lewis, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Centre for Learning Welsh, said, “We’re very pleased to be working with the WSA to introduce a package of learning resources, which will help people working in the sport and leisure sector to strengthen their Welsh skills and gain confidence to use and enjoy their Welsh at work and beyond.”

Andrew Howard added, “A key part of our strategy for 2022 to 2025, Setting Sport Up For Success, is to develop our resources and services relating to the Welsh language.

“We recognise the need to improve this area of our offering to our membership base in order to make sport and leisure in Wales as accessible and inclusive as possible.

“Therefore, we are absolutely delighted to be offering these new opportunities – don’t hesitate in taking full advantage!”
