Street Football Wales Launches Road to Mexico 2026 at Inclusive St David’s Day Tournament

More than 150 players and volunteers from across Wales came together at the Gôl Centre in Cardiff for Tîm Ni, Street Football Wales’ St David’s Day celebration of inclusive football — and the official launch of its Road to Mexico 2026 campaign.

Throughout the day, mixed-gender and inclusive teams competed in a spirited tournament that reflected the energy and pride at the heart of grassroots Welsh football. The Spirit of 58 Cup was won by Wales Deaf Football Association after a dramatic penalty shootout against fellow FAW Affiliate members Man V Fat. Portal Training lifted the Class of 16 Cup following a strong performance across the tournament.

But as with all Street Football Wales events, the significance of the day reached far beyond results.

Ben, playing in only his second tournament, described what being part of Street Football Wales means to him:

“The weekly Street Football sessions have really helped my mental health. I enjoy meeting new people. I think I did really well today — and a big thank you to everyone.”

Funded by Welsh Government through the St David’s Day Fund, Tîm Ni formed part of a national celebration of a modern and inclusive Wales — bringing together football, culture and community in one space. Music, Welsh language and local food added to an atmosphere that felt proudly representative of contemporary Welsh identity.

Street Football Wales delivers free weekly sessions across the country, using football as a vehicle for connection, confidence and personal growth. Many of those attending sessions have experienced homelessness, trauma, addiction or social isolation. Events like Tîm Ni provide a platform to compete, reconnect and represent their communities with pride.

The day was supported by community volunteers and partners, including Howdens and the University of South Wales (USW), whose involvement helped create a welcoming and inclusive environment throughout.

The tournament also marked the public launch of Road to Mexico 2026, the charity’s campaign to send both a men’s and women’s team to represent Wales at next year’s Homeless World Cup.

Interim Director Bethan Thomas said:

“Tîm Ni captured what football in Wales can be — inclusive, proud and rooted in community.

“Our players work hard all year for the opportunity to represent Wales on the international stage. Now we’re asking Wales to stand with them. Every donation and every show of support brings us one step closer to Mexico.

“If you believe in the power of football to change lives, we’d love you to get behind our crowdfunder and be part of this journey.”

The event was attended by Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government Jayne Bryant MS, and FAW President Mike Jones presented trophies at the conclusion of the tournament.

Street Football Wales is aiming to raise £50,000 to support preparation, travel and participation in Mexico in 2026.
