Weightlifting Wales secure Actif North Wales funding to support women and girls in the region
Welsh Sports Association (WSA) member Weightlifting Wales has secured a significant amount of funding to develop programmes to help support young women and girls facing inequalities across North Wales.
Weightlifting Wales announced last month its success in securing Actif Innovation funding to enable the development of new approaches to breaking down barriers to physical activity, ensuring that more girls have access to the benefits of strength training and weightlifting.
In collaboration with local authorities, North Wales-based organisations, and Bangor University, Weightlifting Wales is leading a bespoke project that will explore innovative ways to increase participation, create inclusive opportunities, and make a lasting impact at both local and regional levels. The insights gained from this initiative will help shape future strategies to engage and empower young women through sport.
Key Goals of the Actif Innovation Fund:
- Understanding barriers – Gaining a deeper insight into the challenges girls face in becoming physically active
- Testing needs-led approaches – Trialing innovative methods tailored to the specific needs of young women
- Engaging new partners – Collaborating with organisations and communities to co-create effective solutions
- Sharing knowledge – Using insight and learning to inform future programmes and best practices
- Empowering young women – Promoting confidence, strength, and wellbeing through sport
‘Stronger Together’ – Building Confidence Through Strength
The ‘Stronger Together’ programme will directly support young women and girls in targeted areas of North Wales, particularly those who face significant barriers to participation in physical activity.
This programme is more than just sport—it is about bringing people together, fostering friendship and social connection, and creating a safe, welcoming space where young women can build strength—both physically and mentally. With input from young women, local communities, and key stakeholders, the programme will be developed as a co-produced, tailored initiative that meets the real needs of its participants.
Opportunities for Local Involvement
The programme will be delivered through licensed Weightlifting Wales clubs across North Wales, with opportunities for local people to get involved as volunteers and develop as coaches. By supporting and upskilling individuals within these communities, Weightlifting Wales aim to create a sustainable, long-term impact, ensuring that young women continue to benefit from weightlifting and strength training for years to come.
Next Steps
The project is currently in the planning phase, with delivery set to begin in June 2025.
“We are excited to learn from and empower young women, giving them the confidence, skills, and opportunities to experience the benefits of weightlifting and strength-based activities,” read the organisation’s release.
“Weightlifting Wales is grateful to Actif North Wales for securing this vital support and for their collaboration in connecting partners, sharing expertise, and providing valuable project guidance. Their commitment to innovation and inclusivity is instrumental in helping us create meaningful opportunities for young women and girls across North Wales.”
