WSA DBS Service continues to thrive as milestone record set

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) has hit a milestone in recent weeks, having reached the 20,000 mark for DBS checks conducted in a single financial year.

Setting a new record in the process, it’s the first time the WSA has conducted over 20,000 DBS checks in a single year as more and more organisations than ever trust and utilise our service.

By the end of March, the WSA is on course to reach 21,000 checks – a significant increase from the 18,058 conducted between April 2023 and April 2024, as well as the 17,697 carried out 12 months prior to that.

The WSA is delighted to see the natural progression and growth of its bilingual DBS checking service, which has led to yet another record high with over 350 organisations currently taking advantage of the service.

WSA Business Manager and DBS Lead, Steffan Howells, commented:

“Reaching 20,000 DBS checks a month ahead of schedule is a huge milestone for Vibrant Nation. It’s a testament to our commitment to safeguarding within the sport and leisure sector and across our wider membership.

“Ensuring safe environments for people to participate and thrive has always been our top priority, and this achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of the whole team.”

Meanwhile, Sian Jones, WSA Safeguarding Manager, added:

“DBS checks are one piece of an important puzzle in embedding safer cultures throughout organisations and the role a DBS check plays in safer recruitment cannot be underestimated. It is testament to the Vibrant Nation service, and its’ contribution to safeguarding, to have reached this milestone.”

The service originally debuted in 2016, when the then-DBS service for sport and leisure was announced to cease.

In response, the WSA then set up its own service, a white label solution utilising economies of scale to drive down costs, via Complete Background Screening (CBS) – an industry-leading DBS check and pre-employment screening company.

Ever since, the WSA has been proud to provide a bilingual, cost-effective, efficient solution to a key part in the safeguarding journey of all clubs, facilities and organisations.

It is also tested and approved by the Ministry of Justice and The Home Office and endorsed by both Welsh Government and the NSPCC.

The WSA encourages all organisations across the UK to go through its DBS checking service, which boasts an administration fee of just £6.50 with members benefitting from discounted rates. All profits are also reinvested back into sport and leisure.

Whether based in Wales or elsewhere, a sporting body or in another sector, the WSA DBS checking service is open for all to utilise.
