WSA celebrate 75 years of NHS at Senedd

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) was delighted to attend and support the Senedd’s event celebrating 75 years of our National Health Service.

It has been three quarters of a century since Tredegar-born and raised Aneurin Beaven founded the NHS, an institute that has revolutionised healthcare across the UK and of course still stands strong in providing essential services to millions of people each year.

The WSA was privileged enough to be invited to the Senedd on Wednesday the 5th of July to mark the 75th birthday of the NHS, an occasion on which our CEO Andrew Howard and Head of Policy and Communications Matthew Williams could join in celebrating its history as well as its ever-innovating future.

It was fantastic to hear First Minister Mark Drakeford address the event, stating that with our NHS, “there’s a fight we need to continue waging”.

“Was there ever a service more fundamental to tackling inequality in the first place?” the First Minister pondered.

The WSA was thrilled to support the event and state the case for sport and leisure’s pivotal role in contributing to wellbeing goals and investment in the sector to better the health of the nation.

Physical activity is a vital preventative tool that, with appropriate investment, can support and ease the pressures and need for public healthcare services.

As the membership body and independent voice for sport and leisure in Wales, the WSA will continue to lead advocacy and develop resilience across the sector.

“It was wonderful to be able to take part in such a special event to celebrate such a special organisation at the Senedd,” commented WSA CEO Howard.

“The NHS is a vital service that supports millions across the UK every single day and, as a representative of sport and leisure on the day, it was brilliant to be able to state the case for our sector’s importance in supporting that work.”
