Strengthening Cyber Security in Sport and Leisure: A Timely Priority

The recent high-profile cyber-attacks on major UK retailers such as Marks & Spencer and The CoOp have sent a stark reminder to all sectors of the growing threat posed by cyber crime. While these incidents targeted commercial giants, the sport and leisure sector is by no means immune – and alarmingly, we have already seen cyber incidents at WSA member organisations.

As digital systems become more embedded in everything from membership databases to booking platforms, our sector is increasingly exposed to risk. Cyber criminals see opportunity where defences are weak, and unfortunately, community-focused organisations and smaller governing bodies can be viewed as easy targets.

Sport and leisure organisations collect and manage a wealth of sensitive data – from personal contact information to payment details – and a breach can have significant consequences. Beyond the financial and reputational damage, cyber incidents can also result in operational disruption, putting events, activities, and day-to-day functions at risk. As such, cyber protection can no longer be treated as a back-office issue; it must be a board-level priority. Ensuring staff, volunteers, and partners are cyber aware and systems are up to date is essential to safeguarding both the people and the organisations they serve.

Recognising this growing need, the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) has taken proactive steps to support itself and its members in strengthening their cyber resilience. Through a dedicated partnership with leading experts Pure Cyber, WSA members have access to tailored cyber security solutions, training, and expert advice at preferential rates. Whether it’s understanding the basics of cyber hygiene or responding to a breach, Pure Cyber offers our Members services that meet their specific needs.

“The threat of a cyber-attack featured at the top of our Board-level risk register for several months, until we took steps to mitigate it through targeted staff training, improved procedures, and by subscribing to the Pure Cyber Foundations service,” said WSA CEO, Andrew Howard.

“Of course, there is a monthly cost involved, but it’s a cost-effective solution when compared with the potential financial and reputational damage that could result from a cyber breach.”

As cyber threats continue to evolve, so too must the way we protect against them. Investing in cyber security is not just about risk management – it’s about ensuring the continued trust of members, the integrity of operations, and the reputation of the sector as a whole. The WSA remains committed to helping its members navigate this complex space, and encourages all of its members to make cyber protection a core part of their organisational strategy.
