Thousands of children across Wales take past in World Daily Mile Day!

Thursday 27 April was the first World Daily Mile Day!

Children across Wales and the world have ran, jogged, walked or rolled for 15 minutes and experienced the great benefits of the Daily Mile.

In Wales, almost 600 schools are signed up to the Daily Mile initiative, and as an organisation Welsh Sports Association (WSA) members Welsh Athletics are committed to helping support more schools to get involved.

There are so many benefits of taking part in the initiative, such as an increase in physical and mental health, enhanced emotional well-being and an improvement in learning and concentration in the classroom.

As part of the first World Daily Mile, Welsh Athletics visited Llandough Primary School in the Vale of Glamorgan to take part in the celebrations.

Mr Price, Physical Activity & Well-being lead at Llandough Primary School, shared:

“We’ve really been enjoying the Daily Mile at Llandough, it’s been a brilliant tool to teach the children about looking after themselves and being physically active. They’re really seeing the benefits that it has in their lessons by being more settled and ready for the afternoon.”

Hannah Pretty, Head of Development & Participation at Welsh Athletics, added:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting Llandough Primary School to look at how they run their Daily Mile. To see so many children taking part in the Daily Mile makes me feel so proud.

“At present we have nearly 600 schools in Wales now taking part in the Daily Mile initiative and with the support of a new dedicated role coming into play soon, I am excited to see this number grow exponentially.”

Welsh Heptathlete, Grace Morgan, joined Llandough Primary School in their Daily Mile and commented:

“It’s been great to see all the kids enjoy themselves and have fun. It’s so important for everyone to be active and involved in sport especially athletics and the Daily Mile. It was an important part of my primary school experience when I was younger and it’s great to see it’s being continued on for the younger generation.”

It’s fantastic to see such excellent initiative across the WSA membership base, which are supporting future generations remain active and contribute to a Vibrant, Active Nation.
