As part of the Wales Rugby League strategic plan and working with Sport Wales ‘Vision for Sport’ an exciting opportunity has arisen at the WRL, the national governing body for Rugby League in the Wales. We are seeking to appoint a head coach for the Wales Wheelchair national team.

The positions may require international travel and all applicants must hold a full valid passport. Appointment will be made subject to a DBS check.

Purpose of the Role
•To act as Head Coach to the Wales Rugby League Wheelchair Squad.
•The planning, preparation and coaching of the Wales Rugby League Wheelchair squad throughout the programme of activity.
•Coaching delivery in accordance with the structures and procedures established by the WRL.

Principal Duties and Activities

  • To direct the implementation of the planned squad programme.
  • Participate in all management meetings.
  • Attendance at key fixtures throughout the season.
  • Collate all relevant information for selection meetings.
  • Direct the planning, implementation and review of the technical and tactical preparation of the team.
  • Ensure the WRL values and codes of conduct are followed by players.
  • Promote, wherever possible, the profile of player and coach pathway, the team members and the game of Rugby League as a whole.
  • Direct the organisation of team training sessions including facilities, equipment and resources.
  • Remain aware and take responsibility for players’ performance, fitness and welfare.
  • Remain aware and take responsibility for players’ technical, tactical, physical and mental preparation in addition to their pastoral welfare and individual needs.
  • Ensure the needs of the players are being met through regular monitoring and evaluation of the programme, adapting as necessary.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with all key personnel, colleagues and players as well as outside organisations in order to support and promote the team’s needs. At all times during the agreement to exercise due skill, care and diligence in delivering the services.
  • Avail yourself to the WRL at such specific times and at such specific locations as the parties shall mutually agree to.

Essential Experience and Specialist Knowledge

  • Licensed Coach (UKCC Level 2 or working towards)
  • Current Enhanced DBS
  • Current SPC certificate
  • Experience of working with representative players.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of talent identification processes.
  • Excellent planning skills and Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent management and inter-personal skills.
  • Proven ability to manage a team of coaches, managers and support staff.

Desirable Knowledge

  • Experience of overseas travel with a touring sports squad.
  • A good working knowledge of IT including ability to work with common Microsoft packages.
  • A commitment to being developed as a coach.
  • Education and Training

  • UKAD clean coach training.
  • First Aid Course
  • Evidence of taking further personal development opportunities.
