Welsh Language Support from the WSA
Stemming from member demand, the Welsh Sports Association (WSA) offers Welsh Language support to help and encourage its members and the wider sporting sector to develop the use of the Welsh language and experience the benefits that it can bring.
According to the Annual Population Survey for the year ending in March 2021, over 29% of people in Wales aged three and above are able to speak Welsh, while the 2011 census showed that 42% of children aged between 10 and 14 were Welsh-speakers – these figures are only increasing.
Offering services in Welsh can:
- Attract new members and volunteers to your sport
- Meet the needs of your current members
- Create a sense of team and national pride
The WSA has a firm mission in helping to facilitate the growth and use of Welsh within the sporting sector and wider society. Currently offering a uniquely bi-lingual DBS Checking Service among a host of Welsh language services, we are committed to seeing everyone have the opportunity to do what they love.
The WSA, however, are still eager to take greater strides in this area as we recognise the work is not done. Utilising the wealth of resources outlined on our Welsh Language Support page, we will look to translate the WSA website as a next step, for example.
If you want to get started with offering Welsh services to your members or customers, you can simply take a look at some translated sports terms prepared by the Welsh Language Board rather than revolutionising the way you do things immediately.
Having said that, you can also find details of sport resources provided by the Welsh Language Commissioner, proofreading and translation services, how to attract a bi-lingual audience on social media, and even how to make your organisation’s aesthetic Welsh-friendly – with some services available with a discount through WSA membership!
