Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations 2024 coming to Cardiff
The Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations 2024 tournament will be coming to Cardiff in April, taking place at Sophia Gardens’ Sport Wales National Centre.
The competition will be held between from Tuesday 16 and Thursday 18 April 2024, marking its much-anticipated return to the Welsh capital following the resounding success of the 2023 Wheelchair Rugby European Championship held in the city last May.
The Quad Nations, a vital prelude to the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, will feature a thrilling showdown between teams from Great Britain, France, Japan, and the USA, all of which have already booked their qualification to the Games later this summer.
The tournament promises fierce competition, building on the momentum of Great Britain’s historic gold at Tokyo 2020. The team, led by crowd favourite Aaron Phipps, seeks redemption after France claimed the European Championship title in May 2023. Japan and the USA, buoyed by recent successes, aim to make their mark in this high-stakes event.
To not miss out, you can get your tickets here from as little as £6 for adults and £3 for children!
Jason Brisbane, GBWR Chief Executive Officer, expressed enthusiasm, stating:
“We are looking forward to returning to Cardiff this year to host the Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations. Since the event arrived in Cardiff in 2022, we hosted the 2023 Wheelchair Rugby European Championship last year, and the Welsh hospitality has welcomed us to build a home for the sport in the city! This year’s event promises to be an exciting prelude to the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, as we are bringing together some of the top nations in the world for one of the last competition opportunities before the Games.”
Paul Shaw, head coach for Great Britain, commented:
‘’GB are honoured to be competing in front of such a rugby loving nation once again. After hosting the European Championships in 2023, the Welsh people took wheelchair rugby to their hearts and have provided unwavering support whenever we have competed in Cardiff. We cannot wait to return. These games will provide us with some vital preparation as we continue our journey towards Paris 2024.”
Joe Delagrave, Head Coach of USA Wheelchair Rugby, added:
“USA Wheelchair Rugby is looking forward to competing at the 2024 Quad Nations against some of the best teams in the world. We will use this stiff competition to gauge where we are at with our preparations for the Paris Paralympics. As always when we travel to the UK, we look forward to a great event!”
The Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations promises to be a spectacle filled with heart-pounding action as top athletes put everything on the line. And with the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games just around the corner of course, expect these elite athletes to deliver a showcase of skill and determination that promises to be unforgettable.
The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) urges schools, local rugby clubs and all those who love a live sporting event to experience the fierce competition!
