WSA members Weightlifting Wales enjoy success at Commonwealth Championships

Welsh Sports Association (WSA) member organisation Weightlifting Wales produced an excellent performance at the Commonwealth Championships earlier this month, bringing home three medals and a obtaining a whole host of new records.

Competing between the 11th and the 17th of July in India, Wales secured two Silver medals and one Gold at the Commonwealth Championships.

Cian Green was the first to be awarded a medal for Wales, earning Silver in the Junior 73kg category with a Snatch of 106kg and a Clean & Jerk of 137kg in a brilliant six-for-six performance.

Emma McCready was Wales second medallist of the Championships, breaking no fewer than three Welsh records as she made her international debut. Snatching a personal best of 93kg and Clean & Jerking 111kg, Emma’s record-breaking performance earned her Silver for Wales.

Wales would have to wait for the final day of competition for their Gold medal, as Niamh Collins performed outstandingly to top the 87kg category. She made a Snatch of 85kg, and a 110kg Clean & Jerk for a new Welsh record and personal best.

Huge shout-outs must also go to all of the other Wels athletes that travelled to represent their country on the world stage.

Charlotte Whalley was another to secure a personal best and a Welsh record out there, eventually placing fifth; Harry Nelms broke two Welsh records on his way to also placing fifth on his senior international debut; Leah Clarke joined Emma Mccready in breaking a whopping three Welsh records but was forced to withdraw with injury during the Championships; and Nikole Roberts performed brilliantly in the Junior Women’s 55kg category.

The WSA would like to congratulate Weightlifting Wales athletes, coaches and staff on their wonderful achievements on the world stage this month!

It’s fantastic to see our members enjoy such a successful outing at an international event, teeing up only more excitement for the future.

Llongyfarchiadau!
