Actif North Wales join WSA as Associate Member

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) is delighted to announce the arrival of Actif North Wales to the membership base as an Associate Member.

The organisation is the first of the regional physical activity and sports partnerships to go live in Wales, striving to improve health and wellbeing across communities in North Wales.

Actif North Wales is made up of a variety of bodies, including local authorities, housing associations, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, organisations from the education sector and equality organisations, with the purpose of achieving a shared goal of more active communities in North Wales.

Actif North Wales has recently launched a ten-year strategy to carry this mission out, aiming to address the downward trend in participation by creating and promoting accessible opportunities for everyone to be physically active.

The Regional Partnership also aims to collaborate with other organisations across North Wales to better understand the barriers and challenges people face to being active.

Recent data has shown that only 51% of adults currently meet recommended physical activity guidelines, while only 39% of children and young people take part in in sport three times a week outside of the curriculum compared to 47% in 2018.

Actif North Wales has joined the WSA membership base as an Associate Member to further their collaboration with the wider sport and leisure network in Wales. The organisation will look to take advantage of the WSA’s advocacy work on behalf of the sector as well as services such as the pro-bono NED offer.

On the creation of the organisation and their recent arrival to WSA membership, Actif North Wales’ Regional Director, Manon Ress-O’Brien, stated:

“Our ten-year strategy which launched earlier this year is all about encouraging and enabling everyone in North Wales to lead more active lifestyles.

“The role of partners in collaborating to help enable and support this will be vital. I’m delighted that Actif North Wales has joined the WSA membership, which will be invaluable in supporting our work to build new and diverse partnerships across sectors to develop innovative new approaches to encourage more active communities right across the region.”

WSA Commercial Manager, Tom Sharp, added:

“The WSA is delighted to welcome the first of the Regional Sport Partnerships in Wales to the WSA membership base.

“We understand that the approach and set-up of the partnerships will differ from each region, but we are well placed to offer flexible solutions and utilise the collective strength of the sector and service solutions to enhance the partnerships further.”

Owen Burgess, Service Design and Development Lead Sport Wales, commented:

“We want Wales to be an active nation where everyone has the opportunity to have a lifelong enjoyment of sport. For some this is already the case, but despite the very best efforts of many people, others are still unable to access the same level of opportunities to take part and enjoy being physically active.

“Regional Sport Partnerships are aiming to change this for future generations, transforming the way community sport is created, delivered, led and funded. We are really pleased that Actif North Wales will be receiving support and advice from joining the WSA that will enable them to flourish as a Regional Sport Partnership.”
