WSA and Admiral launch £100k Sustainability in Sports Fund

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) was delighted and proud to launch the Sustainability in Sports Fund with Admiral at the WSA Sustainability in Sport Conference in November, and is thrilled to reveal that Expressions of Interest are now open.

Applications for the fund will close on Friday 31 January, so act quickly!

Each WSA member organisation is invited to apply for a grant of up to £25,000 to support initiatives that deliver positive environmental impacts across Wales, and must use the Expression of Interest Form to apply.  Individual clubs can apply, but the application must come through the WSA Member.

Back in November, Admiral’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Michelle Leavesley, revealed the news as she addressed the WSA Sustainability in Sport Conference.

The Sustainability in Sports Fund will be a pot of £100,000 in total, available to WSA Members to support sustainability in Welsh sport and leisure.

It will be available to support initiatives that deliver positive environmental impact across Wales. Whether your project targets decarbonisation, aims to change the behaviour of participants or spectators, promotes nature and biodiversity, reduces waste, or even enhances community engagement through sustainability campaigns – we want to hear your ideas!

Following the deadline, shortlisted applicants will receive an invitation to pitch their initiative to a panel of judges at Admiral HQ on Friday 14th March 2025 in a bid to secure funding. Pitches will last a maximum of 20 minutes, and there will be an additional 10 minutes of questions from the judges.  Successful bids will be announced on the same day.

“In line with our commitment, I am thrilled to announce a special initiative from Admiral’s Green Impact Fund that underpins our dedication to fostering sustainable innovation,” Michelle stated at the Conference.

Michelle Leavesley announces the Sustainability in Sports Fund

“Admiral has agreed to partner with the Welsh Sports Association to unlock £100,000 of seed funding to support WSA Members to develop ideas and drive positive environmental change.

“We’re looking for projects that are ambitious, impactful, scalable; projects that serve as models for others to follow.”

WSA CEO, Andrew Howard, added:

“I was thrilled when Michelle announced the launch of the Sustainability in Sports Fund in partnership with Admiral, offering £100,000 to support WSA Members. This significant investment is more than just financial support; it represents a commitment to fostering sustainability within the sports sector.

“By empowering our members to develop climate-conscious projects, we are taking meaningful steps towards a greener, more sustainable future in sport. This initiative will inspire action, reduce environmental impact, and demonstrate that positive change is possible when we work collaboratively. We look forward to seeing the innovative ideas and progress this fund will help bring to life in the new year.”
