WSA set new record for DBS checks conducted in a year

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) set a new record for number of DBS checks conducted in a year over financial year April 2023 – April 2024, as more organisations than ever trusted and utilised our service.

Over the course of those 12 months, a whopping 18,058 were processed, with September 2023 seeing 2,578 checks conducted – a monthly record.

This annual figure is an increase on the 12 months prior, when 17,697 checks set a record itself.

The WSA is delighted to see the natural progression and growth of its DBS checking service, which has led to yet another record high with over 350 organisations currently taking advantage of the service.

WSA CEO Andrew Howard commented:

“The WSA is committed to developing the resilience and prosperity of the sport and leisure sector and is proud to offer a service which is bilingual and crucially cost-effective for members and non-members alike.

“Our DBS checking service has been vital to the sport and leisure sector, and beyond, since its launch seven years ago and provides organisations across the UK with a brilliant solution to a necessary safeguarding duty.

“The service is fantastic value for all organisations – in, and out, of sport – and this is reflected in the continuous growth we’ve seen since the service launched!”

The service originally debuted in 2016, when the then-DBS service for sport and leisure was announced to cease.

In response, the WSA then set up its own service, a white label solution utilising economies of scale to drive down costs, via Complete Background Screening (CBS) – an industry-leading DBS check and pre-employment screening company.

Ever since, the WSA has been proud to provide a bilingual, cost-effective, efficient solution to a key part in the safeguarding journey of all clubs, facilities and organisations.

It is also tested and approved by the Ministry of Justice and The Home Office and endorsed by both Welsh Government and the NSPCC.

The WSA encourages all organisations across the UK to go through its DBS checking service, which boasts an administration fee of just £5.50 with members benefitting from discounted rates. All profits are also reinvested back into sport and leisure.

Whether based in Wales or elsewhere, a sporting body or in another sector, the WSA DBS checking service is open for all to utilise.
