Calon Heart – Heart Screening Sessions

Calon Heart – Heart Screening Session 20th November 2021

Calon Heart – the heart charity for Wales (formerly Welsh hearts) have placed over 8,500 defibrillators in Wales and trained over 67,000 people in CPR and defibrillators. Timely intervention is essential when someone is having a cardiac arrest. If a defibrillator is used within 3-5 minutes, survival rates jump from 6% to 74%, which is why Calon Heart want to ensure nobody in Wales is ever further than 3 minutes away from a lifesaving defibrillator.

12 people in the UK under the age of 35 die suddenly and unexpectedly every week from an undiagnosed heart condition. Calon Heart is aiming to reduce this statistic by screening hearts in Wales. Since Italy made it compulsory to screen all hearts of sports players, their risk of cardiac death reduced by a staggering 89% as most heart abnormalities can be detected and then treated with a heart screening.

The WSA wanted to make you aware that there is a Heart Screening session on Saturday 20th November in memory of Ben McDonald. Calon Hearts are particularly encouraging young people that undertake sport or who are considering a career in sport to get their heart screened.

WSA members please get in touch to access the subsidised sessions.

The WSA is working with Calon Hearts to run additional sessions moving forward.

If your organisation is interested in applying for a Defibrillator, you can also do so through Calon Hearts. If you’re seeking a public access defibrillator that’s being fundraised for, then Calon won’t charge VAT and there’s also some grant funding available, so please do get in touch.
